This is Our Community

Bisexual people share many health care needs with the general population while facing distinct challenges, including poorer mental health outcomes than heterosexual, gay or lesbian individuals. Research in Canada and the U.S. links this disparity to biphobia and discrimination experienced in both straight and 2SLGBTQ+ communities. These negative experiences can trigger or worsen mental health issues. Support from friends, family and partners plays a crucial protective role, helping to reduce stress and promote better health outcomes for bisexual people.

This is Our Community (2015), a bisexual anti-stigma campaign by Rainbow Health Ontario and the Re:searching for 2SLGBTQ+ Health team, was inspired by community members and research findings. It featured posters, postcards and buttons to address bisexual exclusion in 2SLGBTQ+ spaces.

Anti-Stigma Videos

We produced three short videos featuring bisexual people sharing candid conversations with their friends, family and partners about the challenges of bisexual life and the support that helps them thrive. A fourth video features service providers discussing the importance of bisexual-competent care. Together, these videos provide positive representation of bisexuality while demonstrating practical ways to support bisexual individuals in both personal and professional relationships.
