Experience in 2SLGBTQ+ Research
As a part of my current doctoral research, I use community-based and/or participatory action research methods e.g. photovoice to address inequities related to Canadian-based 2SGBTQ men’s experiences of suicidality, including generating tangible strategies/recommendations for tailored suicide prevention and mental health intervention programs. This work is currently being funded by the UBC School of Nursing Lyle Creelman Endowment Fund. I have also conducted past research on men’s mental health & relationships, as well as HIV and LGBTQ+ related inequities impacting key population groups in Malaysia.
Prior to starting in academia, I was an educator and community health organizer in Malaysia, primarily working with underprivileged populations in the cancer control and HIV/AIDS space. In this role, I have led the planning, development and implementation of various health education and promotion programs for diverse communities across Malaysia. At present, I am a part of the 2SLGBTQ+ Health Hub alumni, and a member of the International AIDS Society.
Research Interest(s) in 2SLGBTQ+ Communities
As a doctoral candidate and qualitative health researcher at the University of British Columbia, my interests primarily lie in the intersections of gender & health, where I draw on the socio-structural determinants of health framework and use a culturally responsive lens to explore (and address) issues related to racialized and/or 2SLGBTQ+ people’s health. This includes various contexts including relationship-building (intimacy), mental health and sexual health.
