What We Do

Advancing 2SLGBTQ+ Health Care Across Ontario

Rainbow Health Ontario (RHO) works to build a healthcare system where 2SLGBTQ+ people across the province can access affirming, equitable care.

Research shows that the health of 2SLGBTQ+ people is often compromised by stigma, discrimination, invisibility and a lack of cultural and clinical competence within the healthcare system. Belonging to a sexual and/or gender minority is linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety and cancer, as well as behaviours driven by minority stress, like substance use and avoidance of care. These inequities in access, quality, inclusivity and satisfaction are not isolated—they are persistent and entrenched in the Canadian healthcare system (Source).

RHO exists to change that.

We support systemic change in health care by training providers, creating evidence-based resources, influencing policy and amplifying 2SLGBTQ+ health research. Our team is made up of 2SLGBTQ+ people with lived experience, clinical knowledge and a deep understanding of the healthcare system. This shapes every training, resource and consultation we offer—making our work grounded, relevant and community-informed.

How we take action

Training Providers Across Ontario

We offer in-person and online training programs to help healthcare and social service providers deliver clinically sound, culturally competent care to 2SLGBTQ+ clients. Our flexible options include instructor-led sessions, online learning and tailored consultations, ensuring accessible education for providers in all settings.

We serve all regions of Ontario, traveling directly to communities, with a focus on rural and under-served areas. No matter where you practise, we equip providers with the knowledge and tools needed to care for 2SLGBTQ+ clients with respect and competence.

Supporting Trans Health

We build capacity for trans health care through training, mentoring, networks, resources and consultation. We work with partners across the province, including Women’s College Hospital, SickKids and others, to improve Ontarians’ access to gender-affirming care.

Creating and Sharing Resources

Our team develops accessible, evidence-based resources for service providers, organizations and 2SLGBTQ+ community members. From clinical guidelines to health promotion tools and our podcast, 2SLGBTQ+ Health in Focus, our materials are grounded in research and lived experience.

Improving Access to Care

RHO helps 2SLGBTQ+ people find inclusive, affirming care. Our Service Provider Directory connects users with health and social service providers across Ontario who have committed to offering 2SLGBTQ+-positive services.

Consulting On Policy

We bring a strong 2SLGBTQ+ health perspective to public policy processes, advocating for system-level changes that reduce barriers and improve care. This work builds on a long legacy of community-led activism and policy influence.

Amplifying Research

RHO helps bring 2SLGBTQ+ health research into practice. We share findings, foster partnerships, serve on advisory committees and maintain a growing database of researchers to support knowledge exchange across the sector.
