Trans 101: Children and Adolescents

This introductory module builds cultural humility and competence for providers who are new to working with trans, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming children and adolescents (up to age 18). By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts of gender identity, gender expression and gender dysphoria accurately
  • Recognize how cisnormativity influences health care and health care access
  • Identify social determinants of health and the impact of transphobia for trans, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming children and adolescents
  • Provide trans-positive counseling in the context of interpersonal and systemic discrimination that affects mental health
  • Explore common misconceptions about gender identity and expression with parents of trans and nonbinary children and adolescents
  • Explore gender expression and gender identity with clients who are at the beginning of their journey

Prerequisite: 2SLGBTQ+ Foundations

Open to: All healthcare and social service providers who offer counseling and advocacy in a variety of settings. This program is tailored for practitioners who work with trans, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming children and adolescents.

Ronnie Ali, RP

Ronnie Ali (she/her) has over 15 years of experience in diversity and inclusion consulting, 10 years of clinical experience as a registered psychotherapist working with communities marginalized by systemic oppression and discrimination, and 5 years of experience in clinical supervision and education for the next generation of psychotherapists. She has supported people and organizations across various sectors including education, health care, sports, non-profit, technology, and arts & entertainment production. Ronnie is a trans woman of colour and an immigrant-settler on Turtle Island.
