Since 1999, Bill Ryan and Shari Brotman of the School of Social Work at McGill University have focused a major part of their work on the experiences of gay and lesbian elders. Over the last 10 years, and in three phases, this project has developed in to a unique look at the lives of Canadian elders and their caregivers, not only in documenting their lives and experiences, but, most importantly, in engaging institutions and elders themselves in a dialogue about service and policy development in Canada.

This presentation was delivered as the keynote presentation at The Senior Pride Network’s 2009 Conference: Speaking Out with Pride. The presentation describes the process of the project, reports on the results to date and makes recommendations that are grounded clearly in this lived experience.
