For close to 30 years I served the HIV/AIDS and Queer communities as a counsellor at the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). I am Gay identified. I now am semi-retired and have a small private practice. My approach to counselling is uncomplicated. I work from a client-centred, trauma-informed, psycho-social perspective, using a goal-oriented approach.
I believe our psychological problems are partly based on distorted ways of thinking that result from learned patterns. I will use my experience and knowledge to help you better understand yourself, what is going on in your life, and why. I can support, assist, and challenge you in your problem-solving, and help you find healthier ways of coping.
We approach life with an unconscious understanding of how the world works and our place in it. That understanding is not always accurate but it dictates our thoughts, moods, feelings and actions. When we recognize and challenge these distorted ways of thinking we can develop better coping skills, and a better understand of what motivates those around us.
